Leaving a Legacy

Your Legacy – Our Journey

Legacies have played a vital role in shaping the Rother Valley Railway. Thanks to generous gifts left in supporters’ wills, we’ve been able to construct the station building at Robertsbridge Junction and give a new home to the historic turntable from Hither Green in South London.

These legacies have been entrusted to the Rother Valley Railway Heritage Trust (registered charity number 108842), based at Robertsbridge Junction Station. The Heritage Trust is the principal source of grant funding for the Railway Company, with Trustees who oversee spending and respond swiftly to the railway’s evolving needs.

Importantly, the Trust is run predominantly by volunteers who cover their own expenses—so your gift goes directly to the railway, not to overheads. And because the Trust is a registered charity, any legacy you leave may qualify for Inheritance Tax relief under current rules, ensuring not only that your full gift supports the railway’s future but that your Estate can benefit as well.

How to Leave a Legacy

If you’re considering including the Rother Valley Railway Heritage Trust in your will, we strongly recommend seeking advice from a solicitor. Wills and tax law can be complex, and professional guidance ensures your wishes are carried out exactly as you intend.

There are several ways to leave a legacy:

  • A pecuniary legacy: a specific amount of money.
  • A residuary legacy: a percentage or the remainder of your estate after other gifts and expenses.
  • A reversionary legacy: your estate benefits loved ones during their lifetime, then passes to the Trust.

Whichever option you choose, please include the full details of the Trust in your will:

If you’d like your legacy to be used for a specific purpose, we encourage you to speak with our Appeals Director, Helen Douglas. While we’ll do our utmost to honour your wishes, flexibility allows us to adapt your gift to future needs if necessary—your solicitor can help with the right wording.
